What Is a TON Subwallet and How Do You Create One for Separate Balances?
A TON subwallet is a secondary wallet address derived from your main TON wallet that lets you maintain separate balances without creating an entirely new wallet or seed phrase. You create one by using a wallet app that supports subwallet generation, typically through the Tonkeeper or Telegram Wallet interfaces, and then managing each subwallet independently for different purposes.
What makes a subwallet different
A subwallet is not a separate account with its own private keys. It is an additional address tied to the same master seed phrase or Telegram account. The underlying smart contract that controls your TON balance can generate multiple addresses, each acting as its own distinct wallet.
Key differences from a standard wallet:
- Shared security: One seed phrase or Telegram login controls all subwallets. Lose that, and you lose access to every subwallet.
- Independent balances: Each subwallet holds its own TON and jettons. Moving funds between subwallets requires a transaction, just like sending to any other address.
- Separate transaction history: A subwallet's activity does not appear in your main wallet's history, and vice versa.
- Same network fees: Sending from a subwallet costs the same gas as sending from your main wallet. There is no discount for using a derived address.
Why you might want a subwallet
People use subwallets for practical separation, not for anonymity. Common use cases include:
- Budgeting: Keep spending TON in one subwallet and savings or staked TON in another.
- Project funds: Separate personal holdings from funds used for NFT purchases, DeFi activity, or Telegram Mini App interactions.
- Tax tracking: Isolate transaction history for different tax years or purposes without needing multiple wallets.
- Shared device risk: If you use a phone for daily transactions and a laptop for larger moves, a subwallet on each device means one compromise does not drain everything.
A subwallet does not hide your balance from anyone who knows your main address. Blockchain explorers can link derived addresses to the same root wallet if they are generated from the same contract. For privacy, you need a completely separate wallet with a different seed phrase.
How to Create a Subwallet in Tonkeeper
Tonkeeper is the most common TON wallet that offers subwallet creation directly. The exact steps may change with app updates, but the general process is:
- Open Tonkeeper and go to your wallet main screen.
- Tap the wallet name or icon at the top of the screen to open the wallet switcher.
- Look for an option labeled "Create Subwallet" or "Add Wallet." Some versions use a plus icon.
- Choose a name for the subwallet, such as "DeFi" or "Savings."
- Confirm the creation. The app generates a new address under your existing seed phrase.
- The new subwallet appears in your wallet list. Tap it to switch to that address.
You can create multiple subwallets. Each gets its own address starting with a different prefix or number. Tonkeeper shows the current active subwallet clearly so you do not accidentally send from the wrong one.
Creating a Subwallet in Telegram Wallet
Telegram's built-in Wallet bot also supports subwallets, though the interface is more limited than Tonkeeper. To set one up:
- Open the Wallet bot in Telegram.
- Go to Settings or Wallet Management.
- Find the option to add a new wallet or subwallet.
- Name the subwallet and confirm.
- The bot adds it to your wallet list. You can switch between wallets by tapping the current wallet name.
Telegram Wallet subwallets share the same recovery method as your main Telegram Wallet. If you lose your Telegram account, you lose access to all subwallets tied to it. This is different from Tonkeeper, where the seed phrase is your backup.
Funding and Using a Subwallet
A new subwallet starts with a zero balance. To use it:
- Send TON or jettons from your main wallet to the subwallet address. This is a normal on-chain transaction with standard fees.
- Receive funds directly to the subwallet address from anyone. You can share that address publicly.
- Use the subwallet for swaps, NFT purchases, or Mini App connections. The app handles the address switching automatically.
When you connect a subwallet to a dApp via TON Connect, the dApp sees only that subwallet address and balance. Your main wallet and other subwallets remain hidden from that service.
Limitations and Risks
- No isolation from master key compromise: If someone gets your seed phrase or Telegram access, they control every subwallet.
- Recovery complexity: Restoring from a seed phrase brings back all subwallets, but you must know how many you created. Some wallet apps only restore the first subwallet by default. Check your wallet's documentation before relying on subwallets for significant funds.
- App support varies: Not all TON wallets support subwallets. Tonkeeper and Telegram Wallet do. Others may require manual address derivation using command-line tools.
- No privacy benefit: As noted, derived addresses are linkable on-chain.
For most users, one or two subwallets are enough. Creating dozens adds management overhead without meaningful advantage. If you need truly separate wallets for security or privacy reasons, use different seed phrases or hardware wallets instead.
