TON Wallet v4 vs v5 Smart Contract Which Version Should You Use
The Open Network has two widely deployed wallet smart contract versions. V4 has been the standard for years; V5 arrived with new mechanics that change how transactions work. Neither version is universally better.
This breakdown covers what actually changes for you as a user. No FunC code. No developer internals. Just the differences that matter when you send, receive, or onboard someone new.
What V5 Changes
V5 introduces gasless transaction relay. A user can sign a message and have someone else pay the network fee. The wallet contract itself can cover the gas, or a third-party relayer can do it. This is new. V4 cannot do this.
Sponsored fee mechanics are the practical outcome: an app can pay the fee for a user's first transaction, and that user never needs TON to start using the network. They only need TON later if they want to send transactions without a sponsor.
The onboarding experience shifts because of this. A new user can download a wallet, receive a sponsored transaction, and interact with a dApp immediately. No need to buy TON on an exchange first. No need to find a faucet. No need to understand gas before doing anything.
When V5 is not better
V5 is newer but not universally superior. Compatibility is the main constraint. Older dApps and services that hardcoded V4 wallet addresses or assumed V4 behavior may not work with V5 wallets. This is not a bug; it is a consequence of a new contract interface.
Hardware wallets are a concrete example. Some hardware wallet implementations on TON only support V4. If you use a Ledger or similar device to sign transactions, check whether it supports V5. Many do not yet. Using V5 with an unsupported hardware wallet means you cannot sign.
The misconception that V5 is always better ignores these real constraints. If you use only modern dApps and software wallets, V5 works fine. If you rely on older tools or hardware signing, V4 may be your only option.
What stays the same
Both versions store your TON and Jetton tokens. Both versions let you send and receive. Both versions use the same private key derivation. Your seed phrase works for either.
Transaction speed does not change. Network congestion affects both equally. Security assumptions are similar. Neither version is more or less secure for basic sending and receiving.
How to Choose
If you need hardware wallet support, use V4. If you use dApps that explicitly require V4, use V4. If you do not know whether a dApp requires V4, test with a small amount first.
If you want gasless transactions and sponsored fees, use V5. If you onboard new users who do not hold TON, V5 removes a barrier. If you only use modern software wallets that support V5, there is little reason to stay on V4.
Some wallets let you create both types. You can have a V4 wallet for hardware signing and a V5 wallet for everyday use. They share the same seed phrase. They are separate smart contracts.
The Practical Takeaway
V5 is not an upgrade you must install. It is an alternative with different tradeoffs. V4 remains fully functional. No one will force a migration. No deadline exists for switching.
The sponsored fee mechanic is the most user-visible change. It makes TON usable without TON, at least for the first few transactions. That matters for onboarding; it matters less for existing users who already hold TON.
Check your wallet's documentation. Check your hardware wallet's compatibility list. If neither mentions V5, you are probably on V4. That is fine.
Both versions work. Choose based on what you use, not on what is newer.
