How to Buy a Telegram Username on Fragment Step by Step
Fragment is the primary marketplace for Telegram usernames, anonymous numbers, and collectibles. It runs on the TON blockchain. If you want a short or branded Telegram handle, this is where you find one.
The process involves connecting a wallet, finding a username, and completing a purchase. You have two options: an auction or a fixed price, and both work differently.
What you need before you start
You need a TON-compatible wallet. Tonkeeper is the most commonly used option. You also need TON tokens in that wallet. The amount depends on the username you want.
Fragment does not accept credit cards or bank transfers. Everything settles on-chain.
Finding a Username
Go to Fragment.com and browse the username section. The platform lists available usernames with their current status: some are in active auctions, others have a fixed price.
You can search for specific words or patterns. Fragment shows the minimum bid or the buy-now price for each username.
Getgems also lists Telegram usernames. The selection overlaps but is not identical. Fragment tends to have the higher-value names, while Getgems sometimes lists names at lower prices, though the inventory is smaller.
Connecting Your Wallet
Click the "Connect Wallet" button on Fragment, then select Tonkeeper from the list. A QR code appears. Scan it with your Tonkeeper app, or approve the connection directly if you use the browser extension.
Once connected, your wallet address appears on Fragment. Your balance does not show publicly, but Fragment knows how much TON you hold. This matters for bidding.
Buying at a Fixed Price
If a username has a "Buy Now" price, the process is straightforward. Click the button. Fragment shows the total cost, including any platform fee. Confirm the transaction in Tonkeeper. The TON leaves your wallet and the username transfers to your Telegram account. This usually happens within a few minutes, though sometimes it takes longer.
Fragment holds the username in escrow during the transaction; the seller cannot reclaim it once the sale starts. If the delivery fails, Fragment has a refund process. It is not instant, and you may need to contact support.
Bidding in an Auction
Auctions have a minimum bid and a time limit. Place your bid by entering an amount in TON. Fragment requires you to have the full bid amount in your wallet - it does not lock the funds, but it checks your balance.
If someone outbids you, you receive a notification and you can bid again. The auction extends by a few minutes after each late bid, which prevents sniping.
When the auction ends, the highest bidder wins. The TON is deducted from their wallet and the username transfers to their Telegram account.
Common Errors
Bid too low. Fragment rejects bids below the current minimum. The minimum is either the starting price or the previous bid plus a small increment. If you see an error, increase your bid.
Insufficient balance. Your wallet must hold enough TON to cover the bid plus fees. Fragment checks this before submitting the transaction.
Wallet not connected. The connection can expire. Reconnect if the page shows no wallet address.
Non-delivery. The username does not appear in your Telegram account. This is rare but happens. Check the Fragment purchase history. If the status says "delivered" but you cannot see the username, log out of Telegram and log back in. If the status says "pending," wait. If it stays pending for more than a few hours, contact Fragment support.
After the Purchase
The username becomes yours. You can change your Telegram display name to the purchased handle, and you can also sell it later on Fragment or another marketplace. Fragment does not require you to hold the username for any minimum period - you can transfer or sell it immediately.
Risks
The escrow system reduces but does not eliminate risk. Fragment is a centralized platform that controls the sale process. If the platform goes offline during your transaction, the outcome is uncertain.
Username delivery depends on Telegram's cooperation. Fragment has an agreement with Telegram, but that agreement could change. There is no guarantee that usernames purchased today will remain transferable indefinitely.
Prices on Fragment are driven by demand. Some usernames sell for small amounts; others reach high prices. There is no formula that predicts which names will hold value.
Fragment vs Getgems
Getgems is an NFT marketplace that also lists Telegram usernames. Fragment is purpose-built for Telegram assets. Fragment has a cleaner interface for username discovery, while Getgems has a broader range of TON-based collectibles.
If you only want a Telegram username, Fragment is the more direct option. Getgems may have cheaper listings, but the discovery experience is worse. Both platforms use TON. Both require a wallet. Both have the same delivery risks.
