Why your TON balance shows less after staking and when rewards appear
If you stake TON in a nominator pool, your wallet balance will appear lower immediately because staked coins are locked in a smart contract and no longer count as spendable. Your staking rewards are not paid out continuously; they accumulate inside the pool and become claimable only after you unstake, which takes about 36 hours.
What happens to your TON when you stake
When you stake TON through a nominator pool (the standard method on TON), you send your coins to a pool smart contract. That contract delegates them to validators who secure the network. From your wallet’s perspective, the coins have left your address. Your wallet balance reflects only what is freely spendable.
The pool contract keeps a record of your stake. You can see this staked amount inside your wallet app (for example, Tonkeeper shows it under “Staked” or “Nominators”) or on a block explorer like Tonscan. The number you see there is your principal stake, not including any rewards yet.
Why the balance drop looks worse than it is
A common reaction is to think you lost coins. You didn’t. The TON is still yours, just locked. The drop is simply the transfer from your wallet to the pool. If you check the pool’s page on a block explorer, you will see your deposit transaction and the pool’s record of your stake.
Some wallets also show a “total balance” figure that combines your wallet balance and your staked amount. If yours does not, subtract nothing - the staked coins are safe but not visible in the main balance field.
When staking rewards appear
Staking rewards on TON are not streamed to your wallet every few seconds or even every day. The pool earns rewards when validators produce blocks and are paid by the network. Those rewards go into the pool’s balance. The pool then recalculates each nominator’s share, but the extra TON stays in the pool until you withdraw.
You will see your staked amount grow only when you look at the pool’s record of your stake. Some wallets update that number periodically (for example, once per day). Others only refresh when you open the staking screen. If you want to check exactly what the pool owes you, you can use a block explorer to read the pool’s state.
How to claim your rewards
To actually receive rewards into your wallet, you must unstake. The process works like this:
-
Initiate an unstake request inside your wallet. This sends a message to the pool smart contract, telling it you want to withdraw your stake plus earned rewards.
-
Wait approximately 36 hours (the exact time varies by pool, but this is the standard). During this period, your stake remains in the pool and continues earning rewards.
-
Complete the withdrawal after the waiting period ends. The pool will send your principal stake plus all accumulated rewards to your wallet in one transaction.
You do not need to claim rewards separately. Every time you unstake, you get everything at once.
What about liquid staking?
Some platforms offer “liquid staking” where you receive a token (like stTON) representing your staked TON. In that case, your wallet balance shows the liquid staking token, not a drop. The value of that token increases over time as rewards accrue. Liquid staking protocols handle rewards differently, but the standard nominator pool method described above is the most common on TON.
Why rewards are not paid daily
The TON network pays validators in batches, not per transaction. Validator elections happen every 18 hours or so, and rewards are distributed after each election cycle. Pools aggregate these and update internal records. Paying each nominator individually every cycle would cost significant gas fees (transaction fees) for the pool. It is more efficient to let rewards accumulate and pay them in one lump when a user unstakes.
What to check if your balance still seems wrong
- Verify you are looking at the right wallet address. If you staked from a different wallet or a Telegram wallet, check that one.
- Confirm the pool is legitimate. Some scam pools appear in unofficial app stores. Only stake through pools listed in reputable wallets or official TON documentation.
- Look at the pool’s commission. Pools take a fee (usually a percentage of rewards). High commission pools will leave you with less than you might expect. You can see the commission rate on the pool’s page before staking.
- Check if you have any pending unstake requests. If you previously started an unstake but did not complete it, those coins are locked in the withdrawal process and also not visible.
A note on telegram wallet integration
If you are using the Telegram wallet bot (Wallet Bot), staking works slightly differently. The bot may show a combined balance that includes staked coins. Rewards are still not paid until you unstake, but the bot might update the displayed amount more frequently. The underlying mechanism is the same: your TON leaves the wallet, earns rewards in the pool, and returns when you withdraw.
The 36-hour unstake waiting period applies to Telegram wallet staking as well. You cannot bypass it.
Summary
Your TON balance shows less after staking because the coins moved to a pool smart contract. That is normal and expected. Rewards accumulate inside the pool and become available only when you unstake, which takes about 36 hours. There is no way to collect rewards piecemeal from a standard nominator pool. If you want to see your staked amount plus rewards before unstaking, check the staking section of your wallet or a block explorer.
